Since Ukraine regained independence, nearly 260,000 Ukrainians have been trafficked.
That’s according to Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova who made the relevant comment to Ukrinform during a meeting attended by law enforcement officials.
"Trafficking in human beings... According to certain data, 260,000 Ukrainians have been trafficked throughout the years of independence," the ombudsperson said.

According to the prosecutor general, detectives are now working on 700 active cases into the said category of criminal offenses.
Assessing law enforcers’ performance in this regard, Venediktova branded it “unsatisfactory,” and called on the agencies responsible for combating human trafficking to intensify their work.
Among other things, the ombudsperson stressed the need to intensify the inquiry into the laundering of criminal proceeds off of human trafficking schemes.
