President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on January 6, the press service of the head of state has reported.
"The interlocutors discussed the situation in the Middle East, and the Secretary appreciated Ukraine’s condemnation of the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Secretary Pompeo reiterated the strong U.S. support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and underscored our long-term strategic partnership," the report says.

Zelensky informed Pompeo in detail about the results of the agreements reached during the Normandy format meeting, as well as the plans of the Ukrainian government to restore peace in eastern Ukraine. Pompeo welcomed the release of prisoners and the conclusion of an important contract for the transit of gas to Europe.

The president thanked the United States for its continued support for the restoration of peace in Donbas and the return of Crimea. Zelensky also expressed special gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump and the Congress for the decision to provide financial assistance to the security and defense sector of our state.

The sides agreed that these and other issues would be discussed in detail during a meeting between President Zelensky and Secretary Pompeo.

In addition, the parties exchanged congratulations on the occasion of the Christmas holidays.

As reported, Pompeo postponed his visit to Ukraine after an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq on December 31. He was expected to arrive in Kyiv on January 3.
