William Taylor, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. of the United States Embassy in Kyiv, says Ukraine should not withdraw from the negotiation process in Minsk.
"Ukraine, the Minsk group, the United States want to find the way to resolve, end this war on favorable terms for Ukraine. The way to do that is to continue to talk in Minsk, in other places as well," he told Voice of America's Ukrainian language service on August 9. "The final decision, of course, is with Mr. Putin. He is one who can determine if this war is going to end or not, and we have to keep pressing, keep talking, keep the pressure on Russians so that they end this war," he added.
When asked about the possibility of U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine negotiations Kurt Volker's meeting with Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov, he said that Volker had addressed the Russian side in this regard and they exchange views on when it would be possible to continue the dialogue. Earlier, Ukraine's representative in the political working group of the Trilateral Contact Group on Donbas settlement Roman Bezsmertnyi said that after four Ukrainian soldiers were killed in an enemy shelling near Pavlopil in Donbas, Ukraine was supposed to stop its work in Minsk. As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, following the deadly shelling near Pavlopil on August 6, held a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron and initiated an urgent meeting in the Normandy format.
